About Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery by Ronald P. Grelsamer, M.D.
This is my first book review on the blog, and was certainly a helpful read for me. If you are considering either a hip or a knee replacement surgery I strongly urge you to read “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery. My wife picked this up for me, and I read it cover to cover. It gives a day by day general break of what to expect pre and post hospital stay. It gives you some insightful pointers on the precautions after surgery as well as how the surgery is preformed. There’s also a little history on the implants, what they are made of now, and then – and where development is headed. The author, Dr. Grelsamer is a orthopedic surgeon at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases but doesn’t smother you with technical hub-bub and is a straight shooter especially in the section of the book dealing with complications. It’s a great, informative and insightful read.
It didn’t fully address my situation with Crohn’s disease, but does make mention of the effects of Prednisone and how it can lead to AVN. ( Avascular Necrosis. ) – That was enough for me to raise the flag with my doctors however, and share with them my concerns that with my Crohn’s -and my high risk for infection, that I need to be the squeaky wheel here and they all agree. Plus my track record in the hospital and how I don’t respond normally to typical treatments.
This book alerted me to the infection risk, but also put my mind at easy – as now, I kind of know what to expect. Sure every situation is different, and I’m the poster child for shit happens ( literally at times ). So if you or some one you know is considering Hip Replacement surgery ( or knee surgery for that matter ) you need this book. Good stuff.
